When I was a kid I couldn’t wait to get the next issue of Thor comics…he seriously was my favorite superhero!  Now I had other favorites like Iron Man, Captain America, The Vision, the Hulk (who can forget “Hulk vs Thor” arguments! , and Wolverine BUT Thor always has a slight edge on my list of super heroes.  So let’s get into the introductions….

Thor’s name is really Thor Odinson (Odin-son…get it!   He is the Prince of Asgard and will succeed his father Odin.  He is totally loyal to Odin and Asgard and will protect both with his life BUT his pride, self-assurance and temper get the better of him at the most inopportune times and could lead to his downfall if he doesn’t check himself.  Thor is one of the most powerful gods in Norse mythology.  Thor is eventually banished to earth (Midgard) without powers and the “hearth and home” of Asgard.  He is to live among humans without his powers and most of all his magical “side-kick” Mjolnir.

What or who is Mjolnir?  Mjolnir (pronounced ‘myol-neer’ in English) is Thor’s Hammer… a frightening weapon that is said to level entire mountain ranges.  The iron mjolnir is famous throughout Norse myths.  It became a symbol of religion and belief not only for the ancient people but even today.  To this day, mjolnir necklace and mjolnir tattoo adorn the bodies of many a Scandinavian.  Mjolnir armor has also been popular in the video games series Halo.  The mystical hammer is always at Thor’s side and is small enough to hide under his costume or hang from his belt.  The head of the hammer is made of Asgardian metal named ‘Uru’.  Its handle is wrapped in leather which creates a strap at the tip of the handle.  The head has a saying on its side that says “Whoever wields this hammer, IF HE BE WORTHY, shall be endowed with the power of Thor!”  That is why the hammer is enchanted to prevent anyone unworthy from lifting the hammer no matter how strong they are.  It is also infused with the power of the Odinforce that is why it is much more than a hammer.  Mjolnir can bring about storms…the most famous aspects of which are lightning, thunder and hurricane force winds.  It can also break up storms.  Being that its effect on winds is so dramatic, this also enables Thor to fly with great speed or hover.
